Does self exclusion cover prediction market apps?
You signed up for self exclusion, and then a bet showed up somewhere new. If that is you, it is not a sign you did it wrong. These apps sit in a different part of the rules, and it helps to know where the gap is.
What a state list does and does not reach
State self exclusion programs are run for the sportsbooks and casinos that hold a state license. Prediction market apps describe themselves as federally supervised financial products, not state licensed betting, and reporting shows they do not take part in state self exclusion lists. Courts and states are still arguing over how these products should be classified, so the picture may change.
The practical result: being on a state list may not stop a prediction market app from letting you place a bet. The gap sits in the rules, not in you.
What the apps may offer instead
Some prediction market apps have their own tools, such as a break from trading, a voluntary opt out, or a personal funding limit. Reporting also shows that a request to be banned can come back as an automated message listing these options. Look in the app's help or responsible gambling page, ask for the strongest option it has, and keep a copy of what you send.
Do these tonight, in order
- Keep your state self exclusion. It still closes the licensed accounts. Here is each sportsbook's page.
- Check your phone for these apps. Look for prediction market apps, and for finance or crypto apps that have a prediction tab inside them.
- Use each app's own opt out. Ask for the longest break or the full opt out it offers. Plan to ask each app separately.
- Take the payment away. Remove saved cards and linked bank accounts from those apps, so a deposit takes real effort.
- Hand off the passcode. Ask someone you trust to hold the passcode for any blocking you set up on your iPhone or Android.
- Tell one person. "My self exclusion does not cover these apps. Can you check on me this week?"
Why the label matters
Words like trading, positions and contracts can make a bet feel like something else. A national problem gambling group says these products function like gambling whatever the legal label, and that finance wording can lead people to underestimate the risk. If it feels like a bet to you, treat it like one. More on this in fantasy sports and prediction market bets.
For the moment you open the app
A wall is useful, but a removable one can come down in seconds. Put a pause in front of the bet itself. Read self exclusion or a blocker app: which first and why deleting the app alone keeps failing.
Pause before the next bet
Hold The Bet is free with no account. It shows your own number and reason and holds a 30 second pause before you bet. It does not depend on a state list.
Free. No account. Takes two questions.
