Why payday triggers gambling urges, and what to do before it lands

Payday is the hour you have the most money and the least friction. For many people who bet, it is the most dangerous hour of the month.

Why it happens

Money arrives, and your brain tells a story: this time you will bet small, you will stop when you are up, you will only use "extra". The urge is not about the money. It is about the story.

Before it lands

  • Set up the transfer first. Ask your bank to send part of each paycheck to savings the day it arrives, so you never see it in the account you bet from.
  • Pay the fixed bills the same day. Rent and phone are out of the picture before the story starts.
  • Tell one person payday is your hard day. A text is enough.

On the day

  • Keep your betting accounts closed. If you can, lock them for the longest period they offer.
  • When the thought comes, wait 30 seconds before opening anything.
  • Do one thing with the cash that is not a bet. Fill the tank, buy groceries.

Free. No account. Takes two questions.
